A protected natural sanctuary

Why they call it
Bird Island.

San Jorge Island is a rugged archipelago in the Sea of Cortez and a protected home for marine mammals and nesting seabirds. Guests may see pelicans, cormorants, gulls, and other seasonal visitors circling the cliffs.

The star residents are the California sea lions. They are wild animals, so every visit is different. Respectful viewing protects the colony and keeps encounters special for future generations.

Bird Island tour questions.

Is Bird Island the same as San Jorge Island?

Yes. The San Jorge archipelago is commonly called Bird Island by visitors and local tour operators. The rocky islands sit offshore from Puerto Peñasco in the Sea of Cortez.

Do I have to swim or snorkel?

No. Kayaking, snorkeling, and paddleboarding are optional. You may stay aboard, relax in the shade, and watch sea lions and birds from the boat.

Are sea-lion encounters guaranteed?

The colony lives at the islands year-round, but all wildlife is wild and behavior varies. The crew follows safe, respectful viewing practices.

Is this tour good for families?

Families enjoy the boat ride and wildlife viewing. Adults are responsible for supervising children, and participation in water activities depends on comfort, ability, and conditions.

What happens if the weather is poor?

Safety comes first. Offshore conditions are monitored, and the operator may change the schedule, adjust activities, or cancel when conditions are unsafe.

How far ahead should I book?

Capacity is limited and popular dates can fill. Reserving early is recommended, especially for weekends and holiday periods.
